Cincinnati’s Over the Rhine Return to the Kent Stage with an Acoustic Christmas

Fri 12/1 @ 8PM

There’s something about the haunting, nostalgia-laden music of Cincinnati folk-rock duo Over the Rhine that’s oddly suited for Christmas. Their tunes ache with yearning for beauty, love and the comfort of home, family and friends, and often reverberate with the sadness of those yearnings unfulfilled.

The group had a flicker of minor commercial success in the 90s in the wake of such similar bands as 10,000 Maniacs. But since then, the core duo of husband and wife Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist have continued to explore their lives, their relationship and their surroundings in wistfully beautiful music. They also continue to play some, especially up here in Cleveland, where they perform regularly to a devoted fan base.

They’ll be back at one of the frequent northeast Ohio stops, the Kent Stage for an “Acoustic Christmas” show. They’ll perform as a trio, drawing material from the three holiday albums they’ve released in the last 20 years, which Detweiler described as “conjur[ing] up an unusual mix of feelings from childhood: innocence, loss, wonder, joy, sadness.”

Tickets are $22.50 in advance, $27.50 at the door.
