50/50

07.31-08.07.13
50/50

Anyone would take those odds. And this Friday, chances are you can walk away with one of 50 great pieces of art for the nominal cost of $50. Read Josh Usmani’s preview of the hottest, and possibly highest quality, recurring art show of the year.

And speaking of the ’50s, that’s when Larry Durstin began his love affair with Downtown Cleveland. It continues to this day, and he, like us, is never surprised by Cleveland’s recurring reemergence. What else is new?

Well, we’ll tell you. Catch our sneak peek video of the new Luca Italian Cuisine on the Viaduct, with it’s $50 million view of Downtown & the Lake. Or a video peek inside Nature’s Bin’s new training and catering HQ, resurrected from a greasy fast food drive-thru. Or a peek at the fun & sexy Burlesque that enlivened our town in the ’50s, and is making a comeback.

Here’s another good bet, one for each day of the week: The Welcome To Cleveland show on Thursday, designed to woo out-of-town artists, but will probably work on anyone wooable. The Made in the 216 show on Friday, to keep your local bucks circulating nearby. On Saturday, rediscover one of Cleveland’s iconic amusement venues at the Euclid Beach Blast. Or the Local Food Fest in Peninsula on Sunday. Need more? Download the free Cool Cleveland mobile app for a good chance to win $20 like Lexi Bomback.

Mansfield suggests a solution to Coventry’s problem, and while it’s guaranteed to work, it ain’t that that simple. Wanna bet? –Thomas Mulready

Art for All
The 50/50 Show is Anything But Pretentious

The 50/50 Show is easily the hottest art exhibition of the summer in Cleveland.

If you’ve never heard of it, you’re about to be let in on one of the local art community’s best (or worst) kept secrets direct from the main organizer and some of the participating artists…

This place has it all: the taste, the location, the views, the ambiance.

Chef Luca Sema, who was most recently sous chef at Michelangelo’s on Murray Hill, has opened his own place, Luca Italian Cuisine, with his wife Lola, a 3rd level Sommelier who just left Morton’s, and partner Paul Sykes, a gallerist and art dealer.

The taste is unbelievable, a Northern Italian cuisine of veal, pasta, filet mignon and boar that’s out of this world.

The location is the Superior Viaduct, just off W. 25th Street in Ohio City, next door to SPACES in the former Ponte Vecchio digs. Open for dinner, Chef Luca is also offering catering services for private events.

The views are pure Cleveland, no matter which way you are seated: the Lake, Downtown, the Viaduct, The Flats.

And the ambiance, courtesy Sykes, reminds one of a museum, and includes Picassos, a Michelangelo and other international artists such as Yarek Godfrey. You’ll be thanking Cool Cleveland for turning you on to Cleveland’s newest masterpiece.

From the second story back porch of my 1950s childhood home on Hope Avenue, I could see the outline of the Terminal Tower faintly in the distance. All I knew was that it was a very big building in a place called Downtown.

A place where I occasionally went, hand-held on the trolley, to shop with my mother on Saturdays, or anxiously perch on Santa’s lap each Christmas, or breathlessly sit atop my father’s shoulders to watch flag-waving parades on the Fourth.

I believed Downtown was the greatest, most exciting, most mysterious place in the world…

It’s a true American Story.

Wanting to entertain themselves like in the old country, Jews in Cleveland and the rest of America brought their appreciation for the arts to the new world.

Drop-In Tours of the Wonderland Theatre, a precursor to the Cedar-Lee Theatre, take place Tuesdays at 2PM. Other Drop-In Tours take place Wednesdays and Sundays at 2PM for “An American Story” on Jewish immigrants, and on Thursdays at 2PM for tours of the magnificent Temple Gallery.

Follow Jill Rembrandt, director of education and public programs, as she takes us behind the curtain of the Wonderland and the history of WMMS radio, owned by Milton Maltz of Malrite Communications, and its importance in establishing Cleveland as the Rock and Roll Capital of the World. It’s straight out of a fairy tale.

The Lakewood McDonald’s decided to move from their longstanding site on Sloane Avenue to a higher profile Detroit Avenue address, demolishing the venerable Detroit Theatre in the process. But what becomes of their former location?

Enter the nonprofit Cornucopia, Inc., parent company of the organic grocer Nature’s Bin whose core mission is the retraining of the developmentally disabled. And which happens to be located 300 feet away.

Needing more space to turbocharge their catering operation and sextuple their training program, Cornucopia buys the property and, after the requisite “de-arching,” has been re-habbing the former fast food joint into their Vocational Training Center, a state-of-the-art training and catering facility.

Follow executive director Scott Duennes as he takes us on an exclusive tour inside their spanking new kitchen, bakery and food service operation. Then join them on Fri 9/20 to “Raise The Roof” in a celebration with live entertainment, raffles, silent auction, beer, wine unlimited tasty hors d’oeuvres, made right there at the VTC, and see for yourself.

Last week I put forth what I thought was a reasonable solution to at least one form of urban violence, the form that is organized by young people utilizing social media to mob up and wreak havoc, as they did at a festival on Coventry in Cleveland Heights a few years ago.

All the FBI has to do is to step to a couple of the young people sending out such messages soliciting violence and confiscate their devices. The other young people will immediately cease and desist. Trust that no young person wants their phone taken away.

However, that’s a stopgap measure at best…

Heinen’s crunchy wheatberry salad had too many onions. I told the deli-counter lady that. I said, “If I get 10 people to say it’s too oniony, will you bring back the old non-oniony salad?”

She said yes.

But I didn’t get 10 people. I got zero…

Is Tremont Still an Art Community? It seems people in Cleveland or the Cleveland area artist don’t care anymore. I am trying to launch free iPad app for Cleveland Artist but people don’t care to contribute…

Well, this answers my question. Where is all the art? The “Art Walk” if you can actually call it that doesn’t seem to exist. When I first heard about an Art Walk in Tremont every month I was excited. However, when I tried to experience it I was baffled….

Remembering the Past I loved the tribute to Johnson. Though I left Cleveland many years ago, I still consider it my hometown. (I was in Cleveland Municipal Stadium when the Browns shut out the Colts 27-0 in 1964 and have been a long suffering fan ever since…)

“Allegedly” marauding? Come on, Mansfield. You know better than to use that word in this case. I think this is another case of liberals — in this case a liberal inner ring suburb — afraid to touch the loaded subject of race. So they shamefully let the kids win, which only emboldens troublemakers….
