Lorain’s Better Block Event Envisions a More People-Friendly Downtown

Sat 5/19 @ noon-8PM

Three years ago, the FireFish celebration was launched to fill Broadway, downtown Lorain’s main street with artists, musicians street performers and other activities.

Perhaps inspired by that, the one-day Better Block celebration will turn that same section of Broadway between 5th and 8th Streets into a people-friendlier area.

While it won’t be closed to traffic, it will demonstrate how a street can be transformed to better serve all users — drivers, bicyclists, walkers. “Our Better Block event allows communities to experience a street built by people, for people, without having to go through years of planning and millions of dollars,” say the organizers.

People are encouraged to walk or bike to the event (although there will be some parking for those with disabilities) which will include food trucks, a beer garden, pop-up stores, a giant chess game, mini parks, added seating, improved lighting, crosswalks and sidewalks, and temporary bike lanes. It’s free.
