Women Talk at the Happy Dog About Their Place in the Music Business

Thu 3/22 @ 6PM

While the number of women making music and behind the scenes in the music business has increased each decade since the dawn of rock and roll, the music business can still be a really hostile place for women.

Recently, Neil Portnow, CEO of the Recording Academy, which presents the Grammys, justified the lack of women nominees and winners by saying that women needed to “step up.” Since they are already making great music that’s all over the airwaves, apparently he means it’s their responsibility to somehow ameliorate the misogyny of men.( Seriously, how do WOMEN prevent a lame, slightly sexist ditty by Ed Sheeran from winning the “Best Pop Solo Performance” over FOUR women with more powerful and memorable tunes or the “Best Pop Album” over a field that featured three women and two other men — all of whom made albums more likely to stand the test of time?)

Here in Cleveland, the music scene, both onstage and behind the scenes, is brimming with talented women. Some of them will participate in a panel at Sixth City Sounds Mixing Session, taking place at the Happy Dog in Gordon Square, to discuss the issues they face and their underrepresentation in music in general. They include musicians Diana Chittester, Ariel Clayton and Madeline Finn, performer and co-founder of Fresh by Nature Records Samantha Playne Jayne Flowers, and performer/Fresh by Nature Records co-founder/owner of Brittany’s Record Shop Brittany Benton.

Seafair front woman Chayla Hope, co-founder of presenting organization Sixth City Sounds, will moderate. The event is also a chance for all local musicians to meet, socialize and exchange ideas.

It’s free.
