Artists Address Destruction & Renewal in “Destruction of Species” at Worthington Yards

Thu 3/29 @ 6-9PM

The Yards Projects at the Worthington Yards Apartments in the Warehouse district has its grand opening in January, a sweeping lobby space filled with local art, which also graces the upstairs halls. Its first show featured a sampling of the work of more than two dozen local artists ranging from promising recent art school graduates to much-exhibited veterans of the art scene.

The second, which opens this week, is called Destruction of Species, and focuses on the work of three artists addressing the cracks and fissures that have lately grown in our society and its institutions, particularly the political process that governs it.

“We took a hit in our healthcare, national parks and arts programs,” says the exhibit statement. “How do we struggle towards renewal? Can artists provide the perspective and wisdom needed to recover?”

The statement tells us, “The Japanese have a method of repairing broken ceramics with gold called “kintsugi”. Kintsugi is when the cracks, the fissures and the damage are all a part of its history and are kept visible. It’s the art of embracing damage while making something else altogether compelling, reassessed, and possibly even more remarkable then before, in spite of its flawed past.”

The three artists, Adrienne Slane, MARTINEZ E-B, and Rian Brown, incorporates these signs of damage into their work, transforming them into art of a vision for the way forward.

The show opens with a reception Thu 3/29. It’s free and open to the public.
