The South African male vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo has been making music for almost 60 years and sharing its native music and cultural with the world on albums and the concert stage since the early 70 when they began released the first of their now more than 60 albums. It was founded in 1960 by Joseph Shabalala, whose sons now lead the group, although Shabalala remains active in the background.
But mainstream audiences in the U.S. got to know them in the mid-80s when singer/songwriter Paul Simon visited South Africa and tapped them to single on his 1986 multi-platinum Graceland album. Simon also produced the group’s first album to enjoy world-wide release 1987’s Shaka Zulu which won a Grammy for the group, the first of four (and 19 nominations). The group became much in demand to record with other mainstream artists including Josh Groban, Melissa Etheridge and Sarah McLachlan.
Now a seasoned international touring act, Ladysmith Black Mambazo will perform at the Music Box Supper Club. Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 at the door.
