Prosperity’s Popular Lenten Fish Fries Are Back for the Next Seven Fridays

Fri 2/16 @ 11AM-midnight

It’s not like you’ll have a problem finding a Friday fish fry in Cleveland, especially during the Lenten season. If you’d like to check out one in a friendly atmosphere that is rightly celebrated by everyone from devout Catholics to hipsters, check out the one at Tremont’s Prosperity Social Club, every Friday from 2/16-3/30. It’s been running for 13 years but its roots go back half a century.

“When Stan Dembowski owned 1109 Starkweather Avenue he built up a clientele for his Friday tavern fish fry — something he added to the menu shortly after the end of World War II,” says owner Bonnie Flinner, referring to the man who first opened the pub in 1938 as Dempsey’s Oasis.

The menu includes specials such as the Big Fish, haddock in beer batter with coleslaw, house-made tartar sauce and mac & cheese or, for big eaters, the Gotta Haddock which adds a cup of chowder and a couple of potato pierogie. You probably can’t do this every Friday! But there’s plenty of other choices available for those with smaller stomachs, including meatless dinners around potato pancakes, potato pierogi and farmhouse cheese.

The kitchen opens at 11am and offers smaller lunch-sized specials earlier in the day. They serve until midnight all seven Fridays of Lent.
