Paddle to the Sea With Third Coast Percussion at Cleveland Museum of Art

Sun 2/11 @ 2PM

Not all children’s literature began with Harry Potter. The 1941 storybook Paddle to the Sea by Holling C. Holling has been in print continuously and inspired both a 1966 Canadian short subject and this special music performance featuring Third Coast Percussion, visiting from Chicago.

In the tale a First Nations child in Canada carves and launches a tiny canoe with a figure in it. Third Coast’s music follows the toy through river networks and all five Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence River, and ultimately, the Atlantic ocean.

The percussion ensemble’s live soundtrack includes not only their own original rhythms, but also samples from Philip Glass, Jacob Druckman and multicultural native music, on themes of water and the natural world.

Tickets are $30, or $27 for CMA members. Children 17 and under get in free with the purchase of adult ticket, and all are welcome to a tie-in art-making workshop held concurrently at the museum’s Open Studio.
