The 1981 musical Merrily We Roll Along was not one of Stephen Sondheim’s most stellar successes, running for only 52 previews and 16 performances on Broadway. Based on a 1934 George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart play, it follows in reverse time the trajectory of a former Broadway songwriter who gave up music to become a successful Hollywood producer.
But it’s still Sondheim, and that means that there are always copious rewards and great songs, despite what initial audiences may have missed. So Lakeland Civic Theatre is mounting the play, directed by Dr. Martin Friedman, with musical director Jordan Cooper.
General admission tickets are $15, $13 for seniors and $7 for students.
