This puppet show is not for children! Avenue Q swept the Tony Awards in 2004 with its adult burlesque of PBS-TV’s Sesame Street. Now it comes to the Akron Civic Theatre, presented by new local company the Millennial Theatre Project.
Doing twisted (and occasionally touching) riffs the classic Children’s Television Workshop characters, the show follows a young, unemployed college graduate who must find cheap lodgings in the Big City on Avenue Q, amidst a part-human, part-puppet, part-foulmouthed menagerie afflicted with real-world angst: gender confusion, existential dread, alcoholism, promiscuity, internet porn addiction and having grouchy Former Child Star Gary Coleman as your landlord.
We did mention this stuff isn’t for kid audiences, right? Still, the Akron Civic isn’t enforcing an adults-only rule but are practically begging parents to decide if savvy adolescents can take it.
Tickets are $20.Since a Saturday night show is already sold out and the performance is being done in the intimate cabaret setting on the Akron Civic stage, you might want to hurry and get your tickets.
