Cleveland’s boundary-pushing No Exit New Music Orchestra will again play host to their musical soulmates from St. Paul, Minnesota, Zeitgeist. Together the ensembles will play a weekend of free concerts sure to engage sonically adventurous listeners.
On Friday evening, the groups will perform at Wolfs Gallery on Larchmere Road where the audience can browse Wolfs’ collection of paintings and sculpture while taking in a wide-ranging program of pieces by Bohuslav Martinů, Lou Harrison, Billie Holiday and Arthur Herzog, Jr. and Jennifer Higdon, along with a new work by northeast Ohio composer Colin Holter and the world premiere of Tzimtzum by Minnesota-based percussionist Joshua Musikantow, who has composed previous works for Zeitgeist. And there’ll be hors d’oeuvres at 6:30pm, followed by the performance at 7pm.
The following night, the musicians travel north a little ways to Heights Arts in Cleveland Heights to play music by Musikantow, Chinary Ung, Bill Ryan, No Exit’s own Eric M. C. Gonzalez and the world premiere of No Exit for Zeitgeist, composed by Cleveland State University faculty member Nicholas Underhill whose works have been performed by ensembles in Boston, New York and Cleveland, including the Cleveland Orchestra.
They’ll repeat that program at SPACES on Sun 1/14 @ noon. Don’t forget — as we mentioned above, these concerts are free.
