Maltz Museum Presents Program on the History of Mt. Sinai Hospital

Wed 1/31 @ 7PM

Currently, a special exhibit at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, called Beyond Chicken Soup: Jews & Medicine in America, tells the story of how Jews started their own medical schools and hospitals when they were denied care at other hospitals and places in existing medical schools.

One such hospital was Mt. Sinai, opened in 1903, which served the urban poor of all ethnicities and faiths. It moved to E. 105th Street in University Circle in 1916, the same year the Cleveland Museum of Art opened a block away. It closed in 1996 and was demolished in 2006. A solar array stands on the site now.

In conjunction with the exhibit, the Maltz Museum is presenting “Mt. Sinai: A Look Back, A Look Ahead.” Mitchell Balk, president of the Mt. Sinai Health Care Foundation, will share the institution’s history, its important role in medical care in Cleveland and hw the foundation carries on its mission.

It’s $12 for general public, $6 for members. Register here.
