Learn About Venezuela’s Troubled History at the Happy Dog

Tue 2/6 @ 7:30PM

If you’re like most of us, you don’t know a whole lot about what is going on in the South American country of Venezuela.

But you can find out more about its fascinating and fraught history at “Happy Dog Takes on Venezuela: Corruption, Instability and Economic Crisis,” part of the monthly “Happy Dog Takes on the World” series at the Gordon Square club.

Learn about its history as a colony of Spain, a country under military and dictator rule, and a democracy, how good intentions of providing extensive educational, healthcare and housing programs became riddled with corruption, and how Venezuela’s role as an oil exporter has contributed to its problems and its fall from a wealthy democracy to a country in poverty and chaos.

Carina Van Vliet, former Political Affairs Officer in the Americas Division of he United Nations Department of Political Affairs, will talk about these issues with Josh Goodman, Andean News Director at the Associated Press. The program is free and open to all.
