Multi-Racial Nativity Pageant “Coming of the King” Has Two Performances at Tri-C East

Sat 12/16 @ 7:30PM

Sun 12/17 @ 4:30PM

Terence Greene’s Coming of the King is a multi-racial version of Langston Hughes’ Black Nativity. They’re doing it again this year under the auspices of Tri-C’s Creative Arts Academy, but with a new wind at their back; Greene and the Creative Arts Academy have received a substantial grant from the Cleveland Foundation so they’ll be training dancers and producing shows year-round for the forseeable future. There will be two performances at Tri-C East’s Mandel Theatre.

We saw and reviewed Coming of the King in 2014 and, white and secular though we are, found a lot to like. Choreographed and costumed with considerable flair, this holiday dance pageant celebrates the birth of Christ and the Christian life as seen through a lens of African-American song, dance, and vernacular speech. Like that other perennial holiday entertainment, Nutcracker, Coming of the King provides a training ground for dancers while it introduces audiences to the possibilities of dance.

General admission tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. For information call 216-987-4444 or go to tri-c.edu/comingoftheking.
