Eclectic Wax Poetics at MOCA Explores How Sampling Impacted the Hip Hop Sound

Fri 12/8 @ 8PM

“eCLEctic events connect you with global cultural trends through the NEO artists and producers pushing them forward here and beyond. eCLEctic events mix brain and body, providing you — Cleveland’s cultural adventurers — with the kind of smart/social experiences you prefer.”

That’s what the p.r. for MOCA Cleveland’s Wax Poetics events promises. The evening focuses in sampling in hip hop and how it helped to create that sound. First of all, DJ Forrest Getemgump will give a performance/lecture on the history and methods of sampling. Mark Mathews, owner of The WhatKnot, will then lead a panel discussion featuring RA Washington of Guide to Kulchur and the band Mourning [A] BLK Star), producer Amani Cove, Damion Jackson of the Cleveland Break Room Record Shop and others.

The evening wraps up with live beat performances and interactive demonstrations by Cove and Washington. There’ll be a cash bar, and you can also visit MOCA’s exhibitions.

Tickets are $10-$15.
