Oratorio About Lake Erie by Local Composer Margaret Brouwer Debuts at Breen Center

Sun 11/12 @ 3PM

Cleveland-based composer Margaret Brouwer takes her inspiration from the environment on her latest piece, an ambitious undertaking titled Voice of the Lake, an oratorio in four parts for vocal soloists, choirs and chamber orchestra.

According to the press release, it “brings to life the struggle between the recreational and natural joys of Lake Erie and the commercial, agricultural and political issues that threaten its ecological health,” with music and lyrics by Brouwer, poetry by Cleveland poet David Adams and transcripts from public documents.

The sections include “At the Lake,” with people cavorting by the shore as the looming threat of a storm and toxic pollution cast a shadow; “The Public Hearing,” in which people debate the effect of dredging; “The Dream,” where singers express their concern about various types of possible pollution; and “Sunrise on the Lake,” celebrating the beauty, power and value of the lake and why its waters should be protected.

The piece will have its premiere at the Breen Center for the Performing Arts in Ohio City, with Brouwer’s own Blue Streak Ensemble, the Oberlin Musical Union, and theCleveland Institute of Music Children’s Choir performing.

Tickets are $10-$20.
