Holiday Markets Abound This Weekend from the Superior Arts District to Peninsula

Fri 12/1-Sun 2/3

The holiday markets are coming hot and heavy, so much so it’ll be hard to hit them all. But you have no excuse for doing your holiday shopping at that big box store when there are hundreds of artists and craftspeople making beautiful and unique things in all price ranges, from $10 ornaments to works of art costing many hundreds of dollars.

You’ll find markets that specialize in glass or paper works or photography. You’ll find jewelry just about everywhere. Books, statuary, candles, body products, artisan food items, hand-crafted garments and accessories, prints and stationery — they’re all out there waiting for you.

Some of the markets are singular destinations — Peninsula, Hale Farm and Youngstown are day trips unless you live in the area. Cleveland Heights is offering a brand-new holiday market at the elegant old Alcazar Hotel in the Cedar-Fairmount District and just down the hill, the Little Italy holiday artwalk will be happen all weekend.

But if you have a ton of shopping stamina and a long list, and want to do a whirlwind day with lots of choices, think about heading to the AsiaTown/Superior Arts District area where a whole bunch of arts buildings, organizations and galleries have holiday offerings. Make a map and hit them all!

One of the oldest holiday events in the city is the 30th annual ArtCraft Open Studio and Sale in the six-floor Artcraft Building on the corner of Superior and West 26th. More than 50 artists will be offering work in a range of media, both artists who work in the building who’ll be opening their studios and visiting artists coming in for the weekend. You’ll find mixed media work, clothing, jewelry, knitwear, clay candles, perfume, soaps, confections, glass, painting, wood and furniture, paper arts, photography and on Saturday, Laura DeMarco selling and signing her book Lost Cleveland. Hours are Sat 12/2 @ 10am-7pm and Sun 12/3 @ 11am-5pm.

While you’re there, be sure to stop in the Cleveland Print Room on the ground floor of the building to check of the annual members’ Off the Wall show where you can snag a print by a local photographer to grace your — or someone you love’s — wall.

Right around the corner from the Artcraft Building is one of the latest artist spaces, the Lake Affect Building. The resident artists will be opening their doors, and the Cleveland Bazaar will be taking over the second floor with dozen of locals artisans, a sneak preview of their massive holiday event at the 78th Street Studios next week. That’s on Sat 12/2 @ 10am-6pm.
