Ensemble Theatre Mounts O’Neill Play “The Hairy Ape” About Class and Wealth Disparity

Fri 11/17-Sun 12/10

Eugene O’Neill’s The Hairy Ape debuted in 1922 just as the playwright was enjoying his first flush of fame, with a pair of Pulitzers for Beyond the Horizon (1920) and Anna Christie (1922) but well before his often-performed great plays of the early ’30s.

It has a much more symbolic, expressionistic style as it grapples with issues of where the workingman fits into the modern industrialized world, as its physical laborer protagonist deteriorates as he comes into contact with moneyed people of a higher social class.

Ensemble Theatre is staged the play with Ian Wolfgang Hinz directing. It runs Fridays and Saturdays @ 8pm and Sundays @ 2pm through Sun 12/10. The opening night reception will feature Ensemble executive artistic director Celeste Cosentino’s chocolate covered strawberries. Tickets are $12-$25.
