The Cleveland Cello Society is 20 years old this season, and one of the ways it’s celebrating is by presenting three concerts with past winners of its Collegiate Scholarships.

The first is Mike Block, who won the 2002 competition. In his decade-and-a-half career as a cellist, singer, composer and educator, he’s become known for his eclecticism and his exploration of the many ways cello can be used. He’s a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, in which a loose collective of musicians incorporates instruments and sounds from around the world; he founded and leads the Silk Road Global Musician Workshop to bring together international musicians. And he has an ongoing project to record all the Bach Cello Suites in the bathrooms of famous concert halls. And he’s on the faculty at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. And he’s just 35.

He’ll be sharing some of diverse musical ideas at the Cleveland Cello Society concert at the Bop Stop. The bathrooms there aren’t large enough or acoustically suited for records, so he’ll be performing on the stage. Tickets are $15 for general admission or $100 for supporting patrons who get priority seating.

In addition, from 5-7pm that day, he’ll be teaching a workshop in his eclectic styles, geared for cellists at the intermediate level or above (no auditions required though). The workshop, at the Bop Stop, is $40.
