Suma Recording Owner/Engineer Paul Hamann Dies

On Thursday September 14, Cleveland’s music community lost Paul Hamann, recording engineer extraordinaire and owner of Suma Recording in Lake County’s Concord Township.

Hamann was following in the footsteps of his father, the beloved Ken Hamann, who launched the legendary Cleveland Recording in downtown Cleveland where the James Gang and Grand Funk Railroad recorded. He later moved out to Concord Township and established Suma in the mid ’70s.

The elder Hamann died in 2003, but his son picked up where he left off, most prominently recording Pere Ubu, whose leader, David Thomas, always returned from England to record there. He also recorded such prominent Cleveland acts as Alex Bevan, Colin Dussault and Rachel Brown & the Beatnik Playboys, whose new album Look Who’s Back was recorded there earlier this year.

Hamann, who was 62, had been battling cancer for several years but continued to work in the studio until recently. He’s survived by his longtime girlfriend Debbie Daniels.

There will be a memorial afternoon for him at the Beachland Ballroom Sun 10/15 @ 1-4PM. All are welcome.
