Thu 9/7 @ 7PM
Alto sax player/composer/arranger/researcher/authorYoungstown State music professor Dr. Kent Englehart and trumpeter Steve Enos, director of the highly regarded Jazz Studies program at Tri-C, are the co-directors of the East-Central Jazz Educators All-Star Big Band. It features 16 of the region’s most talented musician/educators from seven different colleges and universities.
The ensemble plays a return engagement at Akron’s BLU Jazz + called “Going (Back) to Kansas City” featuring the sounds that made Kansas City swing in the 30s and 40s. Englehart transcribed and orchestrated music from Count Basie’s Small Band with arrangements by Buck Clayton (1937-1943), Jay McShann Big Band with Charlie Parker (1937-1942) and the music that Tadd Dameron wrote and arranged for Harlan Leonard & His Rockets (1932-1940).
In addition to basking in the sounds of this time and place, you can enjoy the tastes as well. Prior to the concert there will be a Kansas City-style BBQ upstairs at Blu Plate.
Tickets for the show are $10; for dinner and the show $30.
