“A Color Removed” Art Project Shines Light on Racial Injustices

Mon 9/25 @ 5:30-8PM

Tue 9/26 @ 5:30-7:30PM

One of the contentious aspects surrounding the shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice by police officers in November 2014 was that the toy gun he had been spotted playing with had the orange safety cap, which indicates that a gun is not real, removed. (Never mind that the officers’ initial assertion that he brandished the gun at them was proven false by the video).

Artist Michael Rakowitz uses this as the jumping-off point for his participatory project A Color Removed. He’ll be collecting orange items at SPACES Gallery on Mon 9/25 which he’ll catalogue for a display there next summer during FRONT International, the new Cleveland Triennial.

In addition, there will be letter writing workshops and campaigns taking place at SPACES on Monday and the FRONT Porch at the Glenville Arts Campus on Tuesday, centered on issues of racial equity and safety. It’s free but space is limited so please RSVP to cvassallo@SPACESgallery.org with “A Color Removed RSVP” in the subject line.
