Cleveland Museum of Art Community Engagement Program Looks at Preserving Karamu History

Wed 9/27 @ 6PM

Community engagement is the hot topic in Cleveland art circles now, as artists and their supporters grapple with issues of who’s included and who’s excluded, and who is making policy for the community.

President/CEO of Karamu House Tony Sias and the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Director of Education and Public Affairs Cyra Levenson will lead a conversation at the museum about how museums and other arts institutions can better connect with their communities.

The program, sponsored by the Womens Council of the Cleveland Museum of Art, will also touch on a new collaboration between CMA and Karamu to archive and display memorabilia relating to African-American theater history, neighborhood history and Cleveland history, revealing plans to digitize artifacts, photos and other items Karamu has accumulated in its 102-year history as America’s oldest black theater.

The program is free and open to all.
