WordStage is a local theatrical troupe largely devoted to recitations and readings. But they occasionally render full-fledged plays in which language, not stage f/x, is paramount. Such is the case with the George Bernard Shaw one-act comedy Dark Lady of the Sonnets.
The 1910 production imagines a fanciful scenario in which William Shakespeare attempts to convince Queen Elizabeth I to create an official state theater for England. The escapade reveals some truths about the identity of a mystery woman in Shakespeare’s love poetry. A live harpsichord soundtrack accompanies the show.
Admission is a suggested $10 donation at the door one hour prior to the performance in Wright Chapel at the Lakewood Presbyterian Church.
