Author Laura DeMarco Talks About “Lost Cleveland” on Coventry and at Maltz Museum

Sat 9/23@ 5:30PM

Wed 9/27 @ 7PM

When it comes to preservation, Cleveland’s got a poor record. Over the years, it’s destroyed countless buildings, streets, neighborhoods and natural features, obliterating its built and environmental history.

Maybe that’s why Plain Dealer Friday Magazine editor Laura DeMarco’s book Lost Cleveland has been so eagerly scarfed up by local readers (she sold out of all 100 books she brought to a recent event at Tremont’s Prosperity Social Club) looking for evidence of landmarks they grew up with.

This week, she’ll be doing a couple of presentations, each with a slightly different slant. On Sat 9/23 she’ll be at the Knitwear pop-up shop in Coventry Village where she’ll talk about Cleveland’s history as one of the country’s knitwear manufacturing powerhouse. That event, presented by Mac’s Backs with Steve Presser and Debbie Apple-Presser is free.

Then on Wed 9/27 she’ll be at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage where her focus will be on lost Jewish history as Cleveland’s Jewish population moved from inner city neighborhoods to suburbs such as Cleveland Heights, University Heights and Beachwood. That program is $6 for Maltz members, $12 for non-members.
