Wallow in Pungent Aromas at the Cleveland Garlic Festival at Shaker Square

Sat 8/26 @ noon-9PM

Sun 8/27 @ noon-6PM

You may not be thinking about planting your garlic now — or even thinking much about next year’s garden at all. But just in time to serve as a reminder that the garlic goes in the ground in October comes the North Union Farmers Market’s 8th annual Cleveland Garlic Festival at Shaker Square.

There will be plenty of garlic growers with a mind-boggling variety to use for planting or culinary purposes — and they’ll be glad to talk to you about flavor, robustness, uses, storage properties and planting tips.

But there’s much, much more. There’s the Top Chef Garlic Grill-Off Competition, a Miss Garlic and her court of princesses, belly dancers, and non-stop live music, with headliner Ronny Lover of the Drifters on Saturday and Carlos Jones & the P.L.U.S. Band on Sunday. And there’s a kids’ area with a hay maze, bungee bounce, Flower the Clown and garlic growing and cooking tips just for kids.

Finally, expect lots and lots of garlic-related food including, inevitably, Mitchell’s garlic-flavored ice cream. Doesn’t sound tempting? There’ll be non-garlic food too plus and local craft beer, wine and Ohio Cheese Guild selections.

Admission is $9 for adults, $5 for senior over 65 and kids 4-12. Bring breath mints.
