Take to the Lake: the Only Time of Year You Can Boat on the Shaker Lakes

Sat 8/19 @ 10AM-5PM

Enjoy some of the last days of summer by “taking to the lake” — the lower Shaker Lake, that is, during the Doan Brook Watershed Partnership’s 6th Annual Take to the Lake. Spend the day hiking and paddling, birds and doing yoga, and listening to music along the banks of the lake.

You can rent a kayak for $15 an hour or taking an hour-long lesson in kayaking or canoeing for $10 for adults, $5 for youth 16 and under. Or just bring your own kayak or canoe. All participants must check in and get a wristband, however. It’s the only time of the year when you can boat on the Shaker Lakes; in order to preserve the surrounding habitat public boating is banned.

Pre-register for classes here. Rentals are on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition to boating, there will be naturalist-led hikes, live bluegrass music and community yoga.

Many years ago I went out on the lower lake in a canoe with Lester Mauter who headed up the county sewer system as I recall and had gotten permission to undertake this project since he was not likely to live much longer and was an avid rower. He and a friend had just refurbished a lovely old canoe and he wanted to test it out. (He died of cancer soon thereafter.). It was really a delightful treat to go out with him.
