Jazz Drummer Jason Marsalis Shows Off His Vibes Chops at Nighttown

Wed 8/30 @ 7PM

Jason Marsalis’ name is familiar to every jazz aficionado as a member of New Orleans’ first family of jazz. He’s one of four sons of pianist/educator Ellis Marsalis, all of whom grew up to be prominent jazz musicians.

Jason’s chosen instrument was drums, which he took up while he was still a pre-schooler and became so adept he was gigging with his dad before his age was in the double digits. One he graduated from high school, it was all music all the time, with Latin jazz ensemble Los Hombres Calientes and the Marcus Roberts Trio.

By the mid ’00s he had added vibraphone to his skill set, something he now plays regularly. He released his first album as a vibes player, Music Update, in 2009, followed by In the World of Mallets in 2013 and 21st Century Trad Band in 2014.

He’ll be performing on vibes with his quartet — pianist Austin Johnson, bassist Will Goble and drummer Dave Potter — at Nighttown. Tickets are $20.
