Blank Canvas Theatre Performs Rarely Seen “Chess” to Benefit Its Work

Fri 9/1 & Sat 9/2 @ 7PM

As the scrappy little Blank Canvas Theatre, located in the 78th Street Studios, celebrates its sixth anniversary, it’s holding a most appropriate benefit for itself: a performance.

The two-night benefit will feature a concert performance of the 1986 musical Chess, with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of ABBA, which will be having a revival on Broadway next year. The musical uses chess as a metaphor for the romantic triangle at the heart of the play, involving an American and a Russian chess champion and a female assistant, and produced the well-known songs “One Night in Bangkok” and “Heaven Help My Heart.” It is, Blank Canvas points out, particularly relevant in light of current revelations about how much Russia is controlling and manipulating U.S. interests.

Each night will start with hors d’oeuvres, music and bidding on raffle items from 7-7:50pm, followed by the performance featuring 30 of the area’s talented actor/singers. Tickets for the evenings are $30.
