Balancing Act

It’s a fine line between confidence & arrogance, between the mountaintop and the gutter, between standing up and falling down.

Between balancing on tiptoe as the Cleveland Inner City Ballet demonstrates, or between art & business, as Jessica Pinsky of Praxis Fiber Workshop explains.

Choose the overflowing bounty of NEO’s Farmers Markets, or a hospice workshop to help you deal with grief. There’s free outdoor Tai Chi in the National Park, and the intense psychological drama of Equus at Blank Canvas. Enjoy the National Hamburger Festival in Akron, versus Cornfest in North Ridgeville. We’re celebrating the tree in Kirtland, along with the low-budget movie in Hudson. Around here, it’s all about balance. –Thomas Mulready

With the proliferation of tutus being worn as everyday clothing, it seems like every little girl in the world aspires to be a ballerina. Certainly a lot of girls go through that phase. But is it more than a phase? Not every child has the chance to test whether she has the ability to follow her dreams.

The Cleveland Inner City Ballet’s mission is to give every child (boys too!) that opportunity. It’s the brainchild of Chandra Ford-White, a trained dancer who started teaching at community centers and churches in 1998 at the urging of late Cleveland councilwoman Fannie Lewis. This week students in the summer classes will showcase at four Cleveland community centers. Dru Thompson talks to Ford-White about how she’s making dance accessible to more kids. Wed 8/9-Fri 8/11.

Fiber artist Jessica Pinsky founded the nonprofit Praxis Fiber Workshop two years ago as a work space for other fiber artists, a place for newcomers to learn about the craft and a gallery to show fiber- and textile-related work. She’s managing this busy creative hub while continuing to produce her own work at a steady pace, with a show last year at HEDGE Gallery and a new one opening this week at BAYarts. that explores the abstract concept of “Equal.”

John Benson catches up with Pinsky to find out how she meets the demands of the growing Praxis organization while maintaining space for her own creative practice. Fri 8/11.

Rootsy Cleveland rockers Third Wish made a big impact on Cleveland in the mid-late 90s, packing local clubs such as Peabody’s and the Odeon, hitting the road for frequent regional tours, and releasing three albums in six years. On the verge of a major breakout, they never quite got over the edge, and they disbanded in 1999.

Lately they’ve been back in touch, one thing has led to another – and now they’re re-assembling the old gang to play a reunion show at the House of Blues. They’re toying with some new tunes too, and – who knows what might come of it? But fans will be thrilled to hear all their old favorites once again. Sat 8/12.

It’s that time of year when fresh, local food lovers are in their glory because northeast Ohio’s farmers markets are overflowing with bounty. The peaches are at their peak and are abundant this year; tomatoes are bursting from the vines, and the zucchinis are large, as zucchinis tend to be. With a market every day of the week, and in nearly every neighborhood, there’s no excuse not to shop what local farmers are growing and local makers are producing. Check out our farmers market guide to find out when and where.

One of the two careers that I would have loved, had I not been a journalist, is dog trainer, and the other is chef. So it was with great interest that I read a New York Times article about the critical worldwide shortage of trained bomb-sniffing dogs….
