After a June Rain-Out, the Night Market in AsiaTown Kicks Off in July

Fri 7/28 @ 5-11PM

The third season of the Night Markets in Asiatown began inauspiciously in June — or rather, it didn’t begin. A nasty storm blew up just as the event was set to get underway, blowing away vendor tents and destroying the merchandise. So the Night Market was cancelled for the first time.

Oh well. They’ll try again in July. (The markets take place the last Friday of the month, June through September). The popular events have grown rapidly in just a few years, attracting massive crowds to the block-long stretch on Rockwell filled with local artisan and maker vendor carts and booths, (mostly) Asian food providers grilling food on the spot, and entertainers from various cultures, ranging from DJs to ethic dancers to taiko drummers to rock & roll bands. Costumed performers, stiltwalkers and Chinese dragon dancers wending through the crowd added atmosphere especially after dark.

It’s no surprise that last year, the Night Markets were sprawling off Rockwell to adjoining streets, and the number of artist/vendors and food offerings (including food trucks) had multiplied exponentially. A large parking lot filled with tables serves as a dining area, with a large stage for performances.

They’re kid-friendly, pet-friendly and best of all, they’re free.
