Jazz Sax Player Joshua Smith Plays Benefit at the BOP STOP to Replace His Stolen Horn

Mon 7/10 @ 7PM

Sax player Joshua Smith, a Cleveland native now living in San Francisco, is well known in the local jazz scene for his stint in the band Birth as well as his collaborations with other top area professional players.

Since he was 16 — 21 years now — he has played a 1952 Selmer Super Balanced Action Tenor Saxophone that he bought in New York and had restored. It’s been his primary instrument, virtually an extension of himself. And a few weeks ago in San Francisco, it was stolen.

“I am in shock and fairly devastated to be parted from my instrument. I feel like part of me is missing as I constantly look around to double check for it like a phantom limb,” he says.

To replace it with a similar instrument could run as much as $10,000 which is why he’s launched a GoFundMe campaign.

In addition, he’ll be playing a benefit concert at the Bop Stop, where he’ll be joined by bassist Aidan Plank, drummer Carmen Castaldi and some special guests. Admission is $12.
