The annual Spud-o-Rama known as the DEVOtional is back for another year of celebrating the legendary Akron art rock band DEVO.
Taking place at the Beachland over two days, Friday gives old fans and newbies a chance to connect and re-connect in the Tavern and bond over an evening of DEVO-inspired bands including Donut Shop Death, Johnny Hates 45’s, Eric Nassau and Lt. dance. It’s pay what you want at the door.
Then on Saturday in the Ballroom, it’s time to gorge on DEVO, with live bands, rare DEVO songs spun between bands, a “Devolved” gift raffle, and the eagerly awaited appearance of members of the band and people connected to them. This year, founding band members Jerry Casale and Robert Lewis and former drummer David Kendrick are the guests. In the evening, hear the Spudboys, Xposed 4Heads, Massive Hotdog Recall featuring Al Mothersbaugh, Manswerk and Malcom Tent. Tickets for the entire day are $35; kids 13 and under are free because they want to suck them in early.
For those still functioning and able to get up early, Sunday offers the 5KDEVO run/walk in downtown Akron. The 3.1 mile course will feature banners every quarter mile containing a factoid about the band’s history. A DEVO-inspired awards ceremony takes place following the race. Registration (due by 7/27) is $35; kids are $20.
