Esperanza Spalding & Andrew Bird Offer an Evening of Distinctive Music at Cain Park

Tue 7/25 @ 8PM

Cain Park’s Evans Amphitheater hosts an intriguing double this week.

Jazz bassist/vocalist Esperanza Spalding’s buzz reached the stratosphere when she became the first jazz artist to win the Best New Artist Grammy in 2011, earning the enmity of Bielebers everywhere when she beat Justin Bieber (among others).

An early achiever, she began playing clubs in her native Portland, Oregon as a teenager, before decamping for the east coast and Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music. She’s now got five albums out under her own name (and many collaborations, typical in jazz) including last year’s Emily’s D+Evolution, which she previewed at Cain Park in 2015. She says the album, dubbed with her middle name, is centered on “rekindling her childhood interest in theater, poetry and movement.”

She’ll be the special guest of singer/songwriter/violinist/virtuoso whistler Andrew Bird, formerly with Squrrel Nut Zippers. His more than a dozen albums exhibit his unique approach to music, incorporating his classical background as well as interests in folk, jazz and American roots music.

Tickets are $35-$58.
