Alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett launched his career as a teenager, playing in the Duke Ellington Orchestra in the late 70s. He also did a stint in the Mel Lewis Orchestra and played for five years in Miles Davis’ band during his controversial electric period.
But Garrett also released his first album as a bandleader way back in 1984, and since then has amassed a large catalog of his own which has snagged him five Grammy nominations. (His 2009 collaborative project, Five Peace band, with Christian McBride, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea and Vinnie Colaiuta won a Grammy). Last year’s Do Your Dance is just the latest.
Garrett brings his quintet to Nighttown this week for two nights — two sets each night — to play music from Do Your Dance and other music from his long career. Tickets are $30.
