Preteens Can Learn About the History of Interracial Marriage in the U.S. at the Chagrin Falls Library

Tue 6/27 @ 4PM

To some of us — especially those of us who live in places like Cleveland Heights where interracial couples are so common it’s barely noticeable — it’s hard to believe that these mixed marriages were once forbidden by law, dubbed “miscengenation.”

That changed exactly 50 years ago in a unanimous U.S. Supreme Court decision which overruled the convictions of a Virginia couple sentenced to prison for marrying a person of the opposite race. Ironically, their name actually was “Loving.”

Many NE Ohio youngsters would be stunned to learn that this was once possible. If you think your child in grades 5-8 would be intrigued to learn more of this history, the Young Explorers Program at the Chagrin Falls Library will have an open discussion of the teen verse novel Loving Vs Virginia (available at the library). Students can also work together to create a stop-action mini-movie about the Supreme Court case.

It’s free but registration is required; call 440-247-3556.
