BlueWater Chamber Orchestra Performs Oratorio ‘Emergent Universe’ at CWRU

Fri 6/30 @ 7:30PM

Sam Guarnaccia’s Emergent Universe Oratorio, which premiered in 2013 in Vermont, is nothing if not ambitious. It tells the story of the evolution of Earth over 13.8 billion years, taking the story from the planet’s creation to the present. Inspired by the 2011 film Journey of the Universe, the work features an orchestra, chorus and soloist as it plays off paleontologist/philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin’s  belief that “the fate of the Earth depends upon the evolution of a “global human consciousness’ that recognizes the need to protect and nurture our planet.” And yet we elected Donald Trump.

Conductor Scott MacPherson will lead Cleveland’s BlueWater Chamber Orchestra and the Cleveland Chamber Choir to perform the work at Case Western Reserve’s Maltz Performing Arts Center in University Circle.

“Told in a series of alternating intensively scored recitatives with major lyrical choral movements, the libretto is set in intimate, dynamic relationship to the music, evoking a deep resonance and response to the new cosmologies-the stories and ways of seeing that shape our behavior and determine our future — offering a unique way through music and poetic narrative, to raise consciousness of humanity’s responsibility to protect and preserve our planet,” they tell us. But we elected Donald Trump anyway.

Tickets are $10-$25.
