Under-30 Polka Stars of the Future Play at Kirkland’s SNPJ Farm

Sun 7/2 @ 3-7PM

Is polka dying? It sure seemed that way in the ’80s and ’90s, when the legends were dying off and younger generations were becoming more and more removed from their ethnic roots.

Not so anymore. The traditional eastern European music, dances, customs and food have acquired a new cache, as evidenced by start-up festivals like Dyngus Day and Kurentovanje.

Now the Slovenian SNPJ Farm in Kirtland is showcasing some of the younger players in the genre in “Polka Stars of the Future.” Accordionists Anthony Culkar and Aaron Bussing will lead an ensemble of musicians under 30 for an afternoon of beloved polkas and waltzes.

The band will play for dancing from 3-7pm. Dinner will be available from 2-4pm, with sandwiches and beverages available all day. One tradition that maybe won’t go over so well with an increasingly vegetarian/vegan younger crowd is the menu, which includes roast beef, smoked Slovenian sausages and barbecued pork.

Admission is $8; 18 and under are free. Bring them along and maybe they’ll be the NEXT generation. For information, call 440-951-6906.
