Hey Mavis’s Laurie Caner Debuts New Songs About Ohio & Erie Canal in Akron

Sat 5/6 @ 10AM-2PM

Talented vocalist/banjo player Laurie Michelle Caner fronts one of the area’s best Americana/folk-style bands Hey Mavis, for which she is the main songwriter. She crafts songs that combine the artless feel of a front-porch mountain jam with the sleek sophistication and assured chops of an urban nightspot house band.

She also won a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to produce a set of new songs about the Ohio and Erie Canal, which will be released on CD later this year. She’ll be previewing some of those songs at the 3rd annual Blue Heron Homecoming, a zero-waste event focusing on recreation, health and education, at the Mustill Store Trailhead Museum. She’ll be joined by Hey Mavis, which includes her husband Ed Caner of violin, Bryan Thomas on bass, Anthony Taddeo on drums and Kevin Johnson on guitar.

“What a fitting place to preview some of our new songs, performing them alongside the canal that is so rich with stories and is such a vibrant part of Akron’s history,” says Caner.

The family-friendly event includes refreshments, walking and bike tours, construction site bus tours, a rookery tour, hands-on exhibits and kids’ activities. And it’s free.
