Forum at Happy Dog Discusses Impact of Performance Rights Fees on Local Live Music Scene

Wed 5/24 @ 6:30PM

The latest controversy to hit the local music scene has been the aggressive attempts by the performance rights organizations — ASCAP, BMI and SESAC — to collect fees from bars that book live music. Some smaller bars have ditched live music as a result, saying they can’t afford the fees.

Are the fees fair? Do songwriters actually benefit or do these actions inhibit local music scenes? Those topics will be discussed at a forum a the Happy Dog in Gordon Square titled “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad PRO? Hosting Live Music Events and Staying on the Performance Rights Organizations Good Side.”

Attorneys and venue owners will talk about what these groups do and what it really costs to comply with their requirements. “Knowing the facts and understanding how to work legally with the system can help lessen the fear of the big bad PRO, creating more opportunities for live music in our community,” they say.

The event is free. RSVP to jpaine@CleMetroBar.org.
