Mon 5/29 @ 10:30PM
Memorial Day isn’t just about pulling the cover off the grill or toting a cooler of cold ones out to the back yard. Originally called Decoration Day, it started just after the Civil War to honor those who died (It’s also not about veterans so it’s not the time to get all “Thank you for your service.”)
To celebrate in a more traditional way, come down to the James A. Garfield Memorial at Lake View Cemetery where a parade starts at 10:30am, followed by a program on the lawn of the memorial featuring keynote speaker, the Rev. Chuck Behrens of the Hospice of the Western Reserve, and the placing of wreaths by various veterans groups. There’ll also be music by the Cleveland Letter Carriers’ Band, a musical group noted for a century of musical entertainment. Finally, Tom Garfield, the great-great-great grandson of President (and Civil War general) Garfield, will close the program with “Amazing Grace” played on the bagpipes.
Bring your lawn chairs or blanket and even a picnic basket and stay a while to enjoy a traditional old-fashioned Memorial Day. It’s free.
