Very very soon the weather in going to be warm for good, and you’re going to want to get those plants in the ground as soon as possible for the longest season of enjoyment. That’s why in mid-May farmers markets are packed with garden starter plants and the area is rife with plant sales.
One of the biggies is the annual organic plant sale and farm festival out at the Crown Point Ecology Center. It starts Fri 5/12 @ 3-7pm and runs Sat 5/12 @ 10am-4pm and Sun 5/14 @ 1-4pm. It includes not only a huge selection of organic, non-GMO plants, with more than 100 varieties of vegetables, flowers and herbs, but also gaden supplies, music, vendors and workshops. On Saturday from 11am-3pm Dr. David Frances from OSU will be answering your tomato-growing questions and kids can take a birdhouse building workshop from 1-2pm for $10. The sale continues Fri 5/19 @ 3-7pm and Sat 5/20 @ 10am-2pm.
On Sat 5/13 @ 9:30am-1pm come out to the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes for its annual plant sale. The center’s parking lot will be packed with perennial and annual flowers, herbs, vegetables, hanging baskets and hard-to-find native plants, as well as plants grown and donated by local gardeners. Knowledgable horticulturalists will be there to offer advice. who will be on hand to help with your selections. There will also be kids’ crafts, refreshments and non-plant vendors.
Also on Saturday 5/13 @ 2-4pm, the LEAF Community in Lakewood is holding its annual heirloom plant sale at the Lakewood Garden Center. Come out and Browse offerings from multiple vendors, who will have flowers, veggie pots, cookbooks, grains and honey. There are also kids’ activities including planting a seed to take home.
