Heights Arts Showcases Early-Career Artists in “Emergent”

“Rabbit Stew” by Jessica Howard

Fri 4/21 @ 6-9PM

The next show at Heights Arts’ gallery is called Emergent 2017 and it’s pretty much what the title suggests. It features a new art from a dozen new graduates of NE Ohio arts programs including the Cleveland Institute of Art, Kent State University, the University of Akron and Baldwin Wallace University.

It’s the second iteration, following its debut in 2015, with the goal of spotlighting the region’s strength in educating artists of the future.

“We take a little bit of a chance when we do this show, but it’s exciting, says Greg Donley, chair of the Heights Arts gallery committee. “We first ask professors at area colleges and universities to suggest names of artists who graduated in the past few years who are doing interesting work right now. Our committee looks at those artist portfolios and comes up with a short list based on the quality of work we see using a kind of compiled rating system. Then we ask the artists if they would like to participate, and not necessarily to submit what we have already seen in their portfolios, but to bring in what they are working on right now, if that’s what most excites them — even if we have not seen those specific works yet. That way this show captures what these new talents are doing at this moment, with the paint barely dry.”

The artists include Meghan Calvert (ceramics); Amber Ford (photography); Jessica Howard (printmaking); Erin Jesson (mixed media); Jacob Koestler (photography); Samantha Konet (painting); Mike Lombardy (mixed media); Nathan Prebonick (painting); Rachel Shelton (drawing); Maia Stern (glass); Grace Summanen, (painting); and Nikki Woods (painting).

The show opens with a reception Fri 4/21 @ 6-9pm and remains on view through Sun 6/4.
