The America Divided five-part documentary series, made last year, deals with issues that prevent our country from the fullest expression of its democratic ideas Democracy for Sale deals with the impact of money on our elections, an especially pressing problem since the U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizens United (2010) and McCutcheon (2014) decisions which lifted some of the controls on this money flood.

Democracy for Sale focuses on North Carolina and how in a matter of just a few years, big money has sent the state careening from a relatively progressive state to one where Republicans have openly admitted moving polling places farther from black voters and have gerrymandered themselves into a supermajority in the state legislature and in its congressional delegation.

Sound familiar? It’s Ohio’s story too. That’s why the film with be screening at First Unitarian Church in Shaker Heights on Friday, and West Shore Unitarian Church on Saturday followed by a discussion about gerrymandering in this state. That discussion will most update attendees about what is going on with Fair Districts Ohio, the effort underway to place an issue on the ballot that would require districts to be drawn to represent voters and not to benefit politicians or political parties.

Both screenings are free and open to all.
