Private prisons is one of those issues that those on the left get outraged about. And indeed, the sale of an Ohio prison to a private company — something Governor Kasich advocated strongly for — has pretty much turned out to be an unmitigated disaster.
The ACLU of Ohio has put together a short documentary explaining how and why things went wrong when the state sold the Lake Erie Correctional Institution in Conneaut to a private company five years ago and why introducing profit into corrections is a bad idea. They’ll show the film, followed by a discussion led by members of the ACLU’s staff at Prisons for Profit: An Evening of Documentary and Discussion at the Lakewood Public Library.
The event is free and open to the public.
