Writers Talk About Swapping Genders in Lit Cleveland Evening at the Euc

There’s been a lot of debate in some literary circles about who is entitled to write about the experience. Is it “cultural appropriation” to write about characters of a race or ethnic group you don’t belong to or, since it’s fiction anyway, is it fair game?

At Literary Cleveland’s next program at the Happy Dog at the Euclid Tavern, two writers will be looking at this issue from another angle: writing from the viewpoint of a different ender. In “Girls Who Write Boys Who Like Boys Who Write Girls,” local playwright Toni K. Thayer & fiction writer Terry Dubow (pictured) will read from their work and discuss the challenges of writing across gender lines and creating characters unlike themselves. There’ll be plenty of time to ask them questions and to chat with them and other local writers. It’s free.
