While South Korea presents the face of a modern, high-tech urban culture, traditional tribal health rituals and what were once called “witch doctor” treatments are still practiced.
Dr. Merose Hwang of Hiram College has studied centuries of Korean history, folkways and healthcare. She will talk about how the high cost of western-style medicine, an aging population and government policies are pushing many Korean citizens to embrace the old ways of shamanism, magic and superstition. Maybe some lessons in there for Republicans try rewrite Obamacare. Big pharma could raise the price of fetish dolls sky-high and make a killing.
The presentation is free and open to the public.
