70s Power Pop Icon Dwight Twilley Performs Acoustic Solo Show at the Euclid Tavern

The Dwight Twilley Band — singer/songwriter/guitarist Dwight Twilley and drummer Phil Seymour — were one of a cluster of stars in the firmament of power pop that was extolled by critics and collectors in the ’70s far beyond any popular success they achieved.

There was no reason for that except that the times were wrong for albums like the band’s brilliant sophomore release, 1977’s Twilley Don’t Mind, who stellar tracks such as “Looking for the Magic” and “That I Remember” curled languidly out of our car cassette player because you sure weren’t going to hear them on the radio much. And they were a LOT better live than much-worshipped Big Star. In fact, they really rocked.

That and their previous record, 1976’s Sincerely, comprised their entire output for ears, although The Great Lost Twilley Album of tracks recorded during the 70s was released in 1993 and Live From the Agora (yes, the one in Cleveland that used to be at the corner of E. 24th and Payne), recorded in October 1976 was released in 2009. Twilley himself went on to a fairly prolific solo career.

Twilley hasn’t appeared in Cleveland in 30 years though. That’s about to change. He’ll be performing at the Happy Dog at the Euclid Tavern on his “Look Ma No Band” solo acoustic tour in which he’ll perform songs from his entire career, tell stories, sell and sign merch, and meet and great fans. Cleveland pop rockers Rainy Day Saints and Shitbox Jimm will open. Admission is $10, and it’s all ages.
