Sax player Jeff Coffin’s name will be familiar to serious music fans as a member of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones from 1997-2010 and currently as a member of theDave Matthews Band, which he joined in 2008 to replace founding member Leroi Moore after his death.
He’s also got his own ensemble called the Mu’Tet, with which he tours in his off time, absorbing and spitting out an array of influences from rock to jazz to funk to folk to world music. The group also features Flecktones percussionist Roy “Futureman” Wooten, JD Souther music director and solo artist Chris Walters on keyboards, Nashville freelance musician Bill Fanning on trumpet and “space trumpet,” and Felix Pastorius of the Yellowjackets on electric bass. (Yes, he is the son of the late bass legend Jaco Pastorius)
The group will play two shows in Northeast Ohio, at BluJazz + in Akron Sunday night and the BOP STOP in Cleveland Monday. Tickets for each show are $25.
