You’ve probably been reading about how Republican congresspersons have been dodging constituents during the current congressional recess period, undoubtedly hoping to avoid a repeat of the disgruntled crowd of more than 1,000 that greeted Congressman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) in a Salt Lake City suburb. More than 200 have no public meetings booked; some are avoiding public blowback by hosting telephone townhalls or saying they will only meet with people one-on-one. They just don’t know how to explain Trump to people.

In Northeast Ohio, you won’t find Republicans David Joyce and Jim Renacci showing their faces (and keep in mind, Renacci has expressed an interest in running for governor!) But if you’re in district 11 — most of Cuyahoga’s east side, some of its west side and a little corridor running down the south of the country and through Richfield to grab a little piece of Akron — thanks, gerrymandering! — Congresswoman Marcia Fudge will be holding a public event at Tri-C’s Corporate College in Warrensville Heights.

She always leaves plenty of time for constituents to take the microphone to express their concerns and ask questions, so there’s no need to shout her down. But you should show up. It’s important that all elected officials see that people are engaged.
